Author of "The Circuit" Skypes with MS Students
Last summer, Roslyn Middle School students read the book The Circuit by Dr. Francisco Jimenez for our annual "One School One Book" reading assignment. Dr. Jimenez is a distinguished author, and the recent recipient of the John Steinbeck Award. This book is a captivating, heartwarming autobiography about a boy growing up as a migrant worker in the fields of California, moving from town to town, and in and out of schools because of his family's migration.
Middle school teachers, in all subject areas, have incorporated themes, lessons, and short stories of The Circuit in their classrooms, weaving them into their year-long curriculum. To enhance the reading experience, a Skype interview was organized with Dr. Jimenez to further discuss The Circuit. Students in all grades submitted questions for the interview and the Student Advisory Club sorted out these questions, choosing the most frequently asked topics to discuss with the author.
The interview, held on October 26, was a huge hit among students and staff members. Many walked away with a deeper understanding of the struggles migrant workers face each day, and the importance of education as a means to future success.
